Title
spectacle buckle
Description
English: Cast copper-alloy double-looped shoe buckle frame. It is sub-oval in plan and plano-convex in section, with a simple, narrowed, central, recessed bar. The frame has rounded ends and trefoil sides with curved bifid projections either side of the expanded edge where the strap bar terminates. Within this expanded section, the strap bar has an incised line on either side of the bar terminus on both sides of the frame. These lines make the frame appear raised between the lines, but this section is flush with the rest of the frame. There are patches of black material on the upper face and on the back of the frame, suggesting that the buckle was originally lacquered. On similar examples of this buckle type, the bar often has a folded sheet copper-alloy plate with attachment stud to fix the buckle to a shoe, but on this example there is no plate. The buckle is 39 mm long and 27 mm wide, and 2 mm in thickness; the bar within the frame is 14 mm long and 1.7 mm wide.

Read (1988) illustrates a similar example on page 143, No.919, which is dated to c.1600-1650.

Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar example on page 70, No.440, which is dated to c.1600-1720.
