Description
English: Cast copper alloy, symmetrical double-looped, sub-oval, shoe buckle with a simple, narrowed, offset pin bar. The frame is slightly raised at the junction between the frame and bar, at either end. The frame has rounded ends and slightly concave sides in plan. The inner edges are expanded where the pin rest is, and straight sided with a flat base so that the frame has a plano-convex profile in cross-section. On similar examples of this buckle type, the bar often has a folded sheet copper-alloy plate with attachment stud to fix the buckle to a shoe, but on this example there is no plate. The pin, plate and stud are now missing.

The buckle is 28 mm long and 18.7 mm wide, and 2.7 mm in thickness; the bar is 10 mm long and 2 mm in thickness.

Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar example on page 71, No.447, which is dated from c.1600-1720.

Read (1988) illustrates another example with raised junctions on page 143, No. 921, which is dated from c.1600-1650.
