Title
spectacle buckle
Description
English: Cast copper alloy double-looped oval spectacle buckle with internally bevelled inside edge and widened exterior edges to each loop. The upper face of each loop has transverse, S-shaped, engraved lines defining a moulded leafy foliate pattern, emanating from a thin raised border that follows the inner edge of the frame. The pin bar is flush with the frame and the pin is now missing. The original surface has corroded away in areas but there are traces of matt black lacquer that have survived, which was used to protect the surface of the copper alloy (Whitehead, 1996, 8).

Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar buckle with moulded vine scroll ornament and black lacquer on page 68, No.425, which is dated from c.1550-1650.
