spectacle buckle |

Description |
English: Cast copper alloy double-looped sub-annular shoe or knee buckle with bevelled internal edge. The frame is oval, in plan, with a narrowed central pin bar which is recessed from the frame. The frame has a flat base and a convex profile, in cross-section, and a bevelled inside edge. The pin is missing, together with any plate or strap. The patina on the upper face of the frame has survived well. The frame is 31.2 mm long and 23 mm wide and 3 mm thick and the pin bar is 13 mm long and 1.5 mm thick.
Similar buckle frames are illustrated by Whitehead (1996) on pages 48-9, Nos.278 & 283 which are dated from c.1650-1720, and by Read (1988) on page 143, No.916, dated from c.1650-1700. |
