There are a couple of reasons I can think of why this species might have black seedlings. The first is obvious - they're hard to see. These come from mountains in The Canaries, where I'd guess most of the herbivores would be birds, which I understand forage by sight rather than smell or taste (unlike mammals) I think Canary Island soils are often composed of a black volcanic ash. The other possibility is that the pigments are there to protect against damagingly intense sunlight at that altitude and latitude (supranubius means 'above the clouds'). Do other tropical mountain plants have black seedlings? Pure conjecture on my part, but I'd like to know. |
