Summary

[edit]
Description

c/n SH.1605 Built 1952 The SB5 was designed to investigate potential wing and tail configurations for what would become the English Electric Lightning. The SB5 could demonstrate three different wings sweep angles and two different tailplane locations. By 1964, with Lightnings in service, research was now related to the design of Concorde. In December 1965 she moved to the Empire Test Pilots School at Boscombe Down who flew her until late 1967 when a Lightning T.4 became available. Flown to RAF Finningley for RAF Museum storage, she moved to RAF Topcliffe in 1971 and then passed through RAF Henlow before settling at Cosford in 1974. She has remained on display at Cosford ever since and is currently in the ‘Test Flight’ hangar, with the alternative ‘T tail’ rear fuselage seen here alongside her. RAF Museum, Cosford, Shropshire, UK.
