English: "Scared of eviction over the bedroom tax? Don't worry. There's a spare room at the Ritz."
Leaflet left behind after an anti-cuts demonstration and march Saturday 13 April 2013. Click here for Seema Chandwani's set of photos of the event. (Left-click on any photo to view larger. UK Labour Party leader Ed Miliband - finally and publicly - promised to repeal the Bedroom Tax if the party wins the General Election on 7 May 2015. He made the pledge at the start of the Party's Annual Conference on 21 September 2013. ______________________________________ A friend in the United States asked me about the UK's "Bedroom Tax" and the reference to the Ritz Hotel. A readable quick intro is an article in The Guardian by Amelia Gentleman. In The human cost of bedroom tax she shows how the official reasons - saving money on Housing Benefit and "a more efficient use of housing stock" - are contradicted by the personal realities of people forced to move away from homes, families, friends and other social support networks. Alison Stenning has an interesting blog about her research on the issue in Cullercoats in north Tyneside. The style is a bit academicky, but is rooted in the lives of real people, Her blog entry in March 2013 gives a brief and helpful overview. The reference in the leaflet to the Ritz is explained by the Daily Mail which printed a photo of the hotel suite where Margaret Thatcher died on 8 April 2013. _________________________________________ § Aerial view of where these photos were taken. |
