GpogrivpkAiLsrali 1 ier*Debes,Leip SEGOVIA. 0. Route. 1 23 Santa Crux (PI. D, 1), with a Gothic church, injured by fire in 1809and restored in 1828. Over the W. portal arc reliefs of the Cru-cifixion and the Pieta. Here also are figures of Ferdinand and Isa-bella, the founders of the convent, whose motto Hanto monta (p. 216)appears both outside and inside the church. We now descend the slope, cross the Eresma, and follow thebroad Alameda to the suppressed Monasterio del Varral (PI. B, 1;vine arbour), with a church built by Juan Gallego in 1494. Of itsformer rich contents nothing is left except the retablo and a fewtombs. The building on the opposite side of the stream is the oldFdbrica de la Moneda (mint), where all Spanish money was coineddown to 1730. To the W. of the Parral lies the suburb of San Marcos (PI. A, 1),with the Romanesque church of * Vera Cruz (PI. A, 1), a twelve-sided structure erected by the Templars in 1208 in imitation of theChurch of the Holy Sepulchre at Jerusale
