I devoted the following days to visiting the monu-ments, or, to be more accurate, the ruins of theMoorish monuments which besides the Alhambraand the Generalife attest the ancient splendor ofGranada. Insomuch as it was the last bulwark ofIslam, Granada is the city which presents the mostnumerous relics of all the cities of Spain. On thehill called the hill of Dinadamar (the Fountain ofTears) one may still see the ruins of four towersrising at the four comers of a great cistern intowhich flowed the waters from the Sierra to supplythe liighest part of the city. There were baths, gar-dens, and villas of which not a trace remains : fromthat point one overlooked the city with its minarets,its terraces, and its mosques gleaming among thepalms and cypresses. Near the convent of San Do-mingo are the remains of gardens and palaces oncejoined to the Alhambra bj a subterranean passage.Within the city is the Alcaiceria, a Moorish marketalmost perfectly preserved, formed of a few littlestreets as straight and narrow as corridors, linedwith two rows of shops, one adjoining the other, andpresenting the strange appearance of an Asiaticbazaar. In short, one cannot take a step in Gra-nada without coming face to face with an arch, anarabesque, a column, or a pile of stones which sug-gests its fantastic, luxurious past.
