Description

During my first visit of the Space Shuttle Endeavour exhibit at California Science Center, I had missed the supplemental exhibit, "Endeavour: the California Story," which deals with the engineering, construction, and support of the Space Shuttle System by California-based workers and companies. So about 40 days later I went back for a make-up photo session.

A replica of Rocketdyne Operations Support Center (ROSC), using many of the elements from the actual ROSC which was located in Canoga Park. The ROSC monitored the first 8 1/2 minutes of every Shuttle launch, to ensure proper performance of the Rocketdyne-built main engines and provide troubleshooting if ever necessary.

This replica exhibit, to re-create the feel of an actual Shuttle launch, shows telemetry data and video footage from the final Endeavour launch, STS-134. Cameras were located on both boosters and the external fuel tank, and their video footage plays for about 9 minutes, when the boosters fall back into the ocean and the external fuel tank falls away from the orbiter. At the actual ROSC, some of the data displayed on these screens would have been sensitive, classified information not available to the general public.
