Summary

[edit]
Description

During my first visit of the Space Shuttle Endeavour exhibit at California Science Center, I had missed the supplemental exhibit, "Endeavour: the California Story," which deals with the engineering, construction, and support of the Space Shuttle System by California-based workers and companies. So about 40 days later I went back for a make-up photo session.

A lavatory used in the Space Shuttle. Due to lack of gravity while in space, it was necessary to urinate into a suction tube, and defecate into a tiny opening on the seat on top. Suction, and sorting mechanisms, did the rest; the waste was exposed to the cold outside temperatures for sanitizing, before being brought back to Earth. (At least this was not the Apollo, where urine was actually ejected into space!) Thanks to the suction tube, even women could urinate while standing. For best results in zero gravity, it was a good idea to use the footsteps at the bottom, and strap oneself in, while answering the call of nature.
