Summary

[edit]
Description

Hans Multscher. (active in Ulm 1427-1467). Wing of the Wurzach Altar, 1437. Left: Christ on the Mount of Olives, Christ before Pilate, carrying the cross and resurrection; Right: Nativity, Adoration of the Magi, Pentecost miracle, Mary's death. Canvas on fir wood. The paintings consistently show strikingly rough people. The move away from an unrealistic ideal of beauty testifies to the new interest in everyday impressions. The same applies to the representation of drop shadows and reflective surfaces. Models can be found with the Dutch painter Jan van Eyck, whose Ghent altarpiece was completed slightly earlier in 1432. The Ulm artist may have known similar works.

Deutsch: Hans Multscher. (tätig in Ulm 1427-1467).
