Summary

[edit]
Description Peter Hemmel von Andlau (active in Strasbourg 1447-1501). Saints Catherine and Our Lady with Child, around 1475-1480. Colored glass, black solder, silver-yellow painting, etched red overlay. In the late Gothic period, Strasbourg stained glass held an outstanding special position. It was in great demand far beyond the boundaries of the imperial city. Until 1624, these panes were part of an image program with figures of saints from a choir window in the Benedictine Abbey of Nuremberg in Salzburg. The architectural frame with music-making angels, birds and foliage seems to be inspired by engravings by the master E.S .; the figure of Our Lady is reminiscent of his "Great Madonna of Einsiedeln". Hessian State Museum Darmstadt.
