Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Tilman Riemenschneider (around 1460 Heiligenstadt - 1531 Würzburg). The Evangelists (Matthew - not photographed), Markus, Lukas (and Johannes - not photographed) from the Münnerstädter Altar, 1490-1492. Limewood. The evangelists in the predella formed the theological and visual foundation for the altar, the overarching theme of which is redemption through Christ's death. The sequence of figures from left to right reflects the order in which their Gospels appear in the Bible. The evangelists differ markedly in terms of age, mood, and pose. In their expressiveness and artistic boldness, these figures are among the masterpieces of medieval sculpture.
Deutsch: Tilman Riemenschneider (um 1460 Heiligenstadt - 1531 Würzburg). Die Evangelisten (Matthäus – nicht fotografiert), Markus, Lukas (und Johannes – nicht fotografiert) vom Münnerstädter Altar, 1490-1492. Lindenholz.
