| Description |
English: Southgate Underground Station, 6 April 2023. The station was opened in March 1933, on the 1932-33 extension of the Piccadilly Line from Finsbury Park to Cockfosters.
The station was designed by Charles Holden, consultant architect to the Underground Electric Railways of London, in European Streamline Moderne style, although it is not typical of his style, being something of a one-off. It seems to resemble a space ship with a ray gun perched on the roof! Inside, the roof is supported by a central pillar. The station was designed as part of an integrated transport system with bus stops around it. The station also incorporates shops whilst there is a 1930’s styled shopping parade beyond the bus stops. The station is listed Grade II*. Pictured is the adjacent contemporay shopping parade by Holden, Station Parade (listed Grade II), with bus stops adjacent. Altough Holden intended that all the stations on the Cockfosters Extension have integrated bus interchange and shopping parades, only Southgate and Turnpike realised this ambition. |
