Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This is a detail from one of the newel posts of the renowned staircase balustrade within the main entry hall of the Southgate-Lewis House (which was commissioned for construction by John Southgate, the bookbinder and publisher). It seems reasonable to conclude that this engraving depicts an ancient Assyrian from the first millennium B.C. art work of Mesopotamia. Note the similarity in the ridges of the helmet skull cap, the waves of stylized bead-like elements within the long hair down the back, and the ridge-like element that follows along the line of the cheek bones. The engraving is also similar to the fragments of reliefs of the Assyrian Crown-Prince ca. 704-681 B.C. that can be found at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Accession Number: 32.143.13; Gift of John D. Rockefeller Jr.). The helmet ridges, the waves of beads in the hair, and the element along the cheek bones can all be seen in this sculpture.
