Bitting found 400 littersto average 8.22 pigs each, which must be considered high.The boars are quite prepotent on account of the age ofthe breed, and they stamp their type strongly on un-improved and grade animals. The conformation tends toward the bacon type,but the development of the hams is excellent. 68 SOUTHERN PORK PRODUCTION The color is black, with a white belting from 4 to 12inches wide that starts at the neck or fore shoulder andextends back to the heart-girth, generally taking in theforelegs. It is not a large breed; mature boars willaverage around 400 pounds, and the sows from 300 to 350pounds. As a breed, it seems fairly well adapted tosouthern conditions, and will probably meet with con-siderable favor, as it has already done in several sections
