Summary
[edit]DescriptionSouthern South America (MODIS 2018-06-06).jpg |
English: The far southern tip of South America sports a diverse landscape ranging from ice-capped mountains, wide grasslands, thick forests, and arid deserts. This region – known as Patagonia – covers more than 1,043,000 square km (402,705 square miles), contains parts of two countries (Chile and Argentina) and is bounded on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the east by the Atlantic Ocean.
The dividing line between Chile (west) and Argentina (east) runs though the tall Andes Mountains. These mountains also are home to a huge area of compacted ice that stretch for hundreds of kilometers in the high ranges of both Chile and Argentina. The northern and southern lobes of the Patagonian icefield are what’s left of a much larger ice sheet that reached its maximum size about 18,000 years ago. Though just a fraction of their previous size, the modern icefields remain the largest expanse of ice in the southern hemisphere outside of Antarctica. The meltwater of the icefields gives rise to several spectacular lakes which can be easily seen from space. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of southern South America on June 3, 2018. |
