Naval Prefecture (PL C, 4), which contains nothing of special interest,and behind it is the Jar din Public, a fine promenade. Farther on, to the N.E. of the town, is the Commercial Harbour,or Cabane Carree (PL C, D, 1). It has two floating basins of moder-ate size, and a much larger one (completed in 1890) higher up theriver. The chief articles of trade at Rochefort are wine, brandy,grain, cattle, salt, timber, coal, and salt-fish. On the N. side of the town, outside the fortifications, is a largeNaval Hospital (PL A, B, 2; 800 beds), with a School of Naval Med-icine. There is also a very deep artesian well, the water of whichhas a temperature of 100° Fahr. To the S. of the hospital extend theCours dAblois and the Cours Roy-Bry. La Cayenne, whence a steam-ferry (free) crosses the Seudre to La Grive, united by railway with Ponsand Royan (P- 56). — From (251/2 M.) Le Chapus a steamer (75 or 60 c.)crosses to (15-20 min.) Le Chateau or to St. Trojan in the He dOleron.The He dOlSron, which with the He de Re (p. 25) bounds the straitsof Antioche, and is separated from the mainland by the Straits of Mau-musson, is a flat, fertile, and populous island, measuring 18 M. in lengthby 21/2-8 M. in width. Le Cltdteau-dOliron (Hot. de France) is a small forti-fied town with 3573 inhabitants.
