Looking East along Soutease Bridge towards Itford Hill
Summary
[edit]DescriptionSouthease Swing Bridge - geograph.org.uk - 1092180.jpg |
English: Southease Swing Bridge The first bridge at this point was built in the first decades of the 19th century until it was replaced in the 1880s by this one to allow barges upstream to Asham Wharf and Lewes. Since the demise of the former the bridge has not been opened since 1967 though the mechanism is still intact underneath. The bridge is still occasionally used by vehicles needing to access Southease station or Itford Farm, though the latter is now a private route. Itford Hill provides the backdrop. |
