Entrance to the Harbour of Messina—The City—The Cathedral—Taormina—The Theatre—Aci Reale—Catania. ^E leave Naples late in the afternoon of aJanuary day, and the departing daylight onlyallows us to get a good view of the city andof S. Elmo. Vesuvius and Monte Sommacontinue visible for some length of time, and wepass close to the island of Capri. On the followingmorning we find ourselves among the Lipari Islands,and the regular cone of Stromboli is specially con-spicuous. Soon after we sight the Sicilian coast andthe prominent lighthouse at the entrance of the Straitsof Messina, which are here so narrow that the smallesthouses on both the Calabrian and Sicilian shores arcplainly seen. Nearly opposite the extremity ofSicily we see Scilla on the opposite coast; then weenter the harbour of Messina, protected from the sea by a projectingsickle-shaped mass of land, from which the town took its Greekname of
