He was the author of a pamphlet against the CincinnatiSociety which excited great popular favor against the hereditaryfeatures of the society and produced a reformation in that respect.Just before the Judge died his physician told him that he wouldhave to tap him for the dropsy. Before God, then, said theJudge, my days are numbered, for nothing was ever tapped inthis house that lasted long. Judge Burke lived to a good old age, and was a Chancellor ofthe State at his death. He was in the habit of sitting in Congresswhilst he was a Judge of the State, which caused the passage ofthe law prohibiting a Judge leaving the State without permissionof the Legislature.
