A South Australian Railways 520 class locomotive with inexplicable "532" markings (since the last loco built was 531)

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: South Australian Railways 520 class locomotive of the second variation with the number "532" in the standard positions on the front valance and on either side of the headlight. Note on print states year taken as 1948. The photograph is an oddity, since the last locomotive of the 520 class production line was 531 (source: Castle, Brian J. (April 1948). Bulletin. Australian Railway Historical Society. Vol. XXI issue 126 p. 44) and no records of a locomotive numbered 532 are known to exist (source: National Railway Museum, Port Adelaide). No other photo of a locomotive with "532" markings is known to have been extant. A possible explanation is that the Islington Works paint shop added the number temporarily (or mistakenly) on to a locomotive for reasons or purposes unknown.
