Summary
[edit]DescriptionSouth-West face of Ballast Bank - geograph.org.uk - 709531.jpg |
English: South-West face of Ballast Bank To quote from the information board at the south end of the Bank:
"This man made barrier was built by the Duke of Portland to protect the new Harbour he was building. It was constriucted from 1840 on, and got its name due to ballast from cargo boats being used in its construction. Other material from the newly constructed docks was also used. Prior to it being built the harbour was very exposed to gales and several ships were wrecked when using it. The development of the harbour by the Duke was instrumental in the establishment of Troon and its growth into a thriving town." |
