Summary

[edit]
Description

This is one of only two genuine surviving Sopwith Triplanes. The other is at the RAF Museum at Hendon. It is believed to have been built as 'N5486' which was supplied to the Russian government in 1917 for evaluation. Fitted with skis, it was later captured by the Bolshevists and used as a trainer in the Red Air Force. The airframe appears to be largely original, although the cowling and undercarriage are not. A photo of the aircraft on skis shows it appearing to be in standard RNAS colours but with a white cowling and Russian star insignia under both ends of each wing. Repainted from the bright blue that it wore on my last visit in 2012, the aeroplane now wears a reasonably accurate Red Army scheme from the Russian Civil War era. On display in Hangar 8 (the original large hangar) at the Central Air Force museum, Monino, Moscow Oblast, Russia.
