Sony Walkman WM-F404, c. 1988

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This is the one that had it all: Radio, recording capability, auto-reverse, and even included a stereo microphone with 3.5mm jack.

I think my family bought it for my older sister to record lectures at university. This was released in 1988.

Additional comment from Pittigrilli to the original Flickr comment on the image above: This seems to have been a technically highly extraordinary device, for some technical specs see the cardboard from the packaging which was thankfully photographed with the device - only visible in the original, much larger image (see right below). It took me some time to figure out which exact capabilities this device has, which to my knowledge (!) are partly almost unique in a Walkman etc.:

1) While it had Auto reverse (like many higher priced 'Walkmen' of various producers at that time), it also - extraordinarily - featured stereo recording from an included 3.5 mm jack microphone (visible only in the larger version of the image). The recording function worked also in auto reverse mode, hence one could make recordings on both tape sides after another, with some seconds pause in between due to the 'blank' non-usable end of the tape material).

2) It featured noise-reducing Dolby B, but only for playback, NOT for recording - probably due to the fact that the circuitry for Dolby recording was too large or too expensive (for the aimed sales price) at the time OR that the license fees to Dolby Inc. would have been too high.

3) Additionally to FM and AM radio function it had - much to my surprise - a built-in TV tuner, but (lol) only for sound, as it lacks a display. Maybe this function was aimed at people who wanted to attain football live matches, listen to the news on TV, or the like. I honestly do not know. If you know better or have a reasonable idea, I would appreciate a message on my talk page.
