English: Sony TC-U5 cassette deck (1979).
The TC-U5 and its older but simpler sibling TC-U2 (1978) were the ultimate stage of "all-metal bling-bling" style in Sony's cassette deck lineup. Sculpted brushed metal bezels, bronze-coloured toggle paddles, massive control knobs and large needle meters - it had everything. By 1980 the knobs will shrink in size, by 1982 silver models will be phased out in favour of black, and 1985 it will be black plastic everywhere. And, of course, classic VU meters disappear completely. Sonically, the TC-U5 was a mid-fi, entry model - but the transport was quite robust and serviceable in the long run. |
