Description
English: At the age of 16, Kosumoto Otaki (1807-1865), also known by the name of Sonogi, met Von Sibold who was then staying on Deshima and became his lover. Women were not allowed on Deshima, though an exception was made for ‘courtesans’. It is assumed that this was her profession. Another theory is that she had herself registered as such so that she could visit Von Siebold. For many years, she lived in Von Siebold’s house on Deshima. Their daughter Oine (1827-1903), who was to become Japan’s firstfemale doctor and obstetrician, was born on 10 May 1827. Children were not allowed on Deshima either and, therefore, Sonogi moved to Nagasaki with her child. Von Siebold called on them daily and saw to it that they lacked nothing.
