Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A view of the Blue and White Garden at Sonnenberg Gardens State Historic Park, as seen in August 2021. With a surface area of only 2,400 square feet, this is the smallest garden at Sonnenberg, one of three such intimately-proportioned "garden rooms" designed between 1911 and '16 by landscape architect John Hanrahan for locations adjacent to the mansion, and reputedly lady-of-the-house Mary Clark Thompson's favorite among all those on the estate. Ringed consecutively by trellises, the exterior walls of the mansion, and a marble niche (behind the photographer from the perspective of this image) surrounded by a cherub-flanked fountain (right foreground) and now containing the statue of the goddess Diana once located near the Roman bath, the garden takes its name from the fact that it was designed to contain only blue and white blossoms: plantings mentioned in historical documentation have included gentian sage, lobelia, larkspur, delphinium, sweet alyssum, campanula, phlox, hyacinth, agapanthus, and various types of lilies.
