Summary
[edit]DescriptionSonnenberg Gardens, Canandaigua, New York - 20210820 - 23 - Sub-Rosa Garden.jpg |
English: A view inward from the entrance to the Sub-Rosa Garden at Sonnenberg Gardens State Historic Park, as seen in August 2021. Among the several enclosed "garden rooms" on the estate that were inspired by Italian landscape design, the Sub-Rosa garden is a circular expanse completed in 1907. The namesake theme of the garden was the ancient Greco-Roman association of roses with silence and discretion (roses, or carvings or paintings thereof, were often placed in conference rooms where the proceedings were to remain secret), whence the space's intimate dimensions, the dense walls of foliage that surround it, and the preponderance of Classically-styled statuary and ornamentation. Interestingly, one thing the garden lacks is blooming plants of any kind: the basis of the aesthetic is the contrast between the white of the marble and the greenery of the bushes and grass. |
