| Description |
English: Somes Sound is a long, narrow embayment in the southern margin of coastal Maine's Mt. Desert Island. It is an inland extension of the Atlantic Ocean - it's actually a fjord (that's the only correct spelling), a deep glacial valley that's been flooded by seawater.
From park signage: Somes Sound divides Mount Desert Island nearly in half. [This is] the only fjord on the east coast of the United States. A fjord is a long, deep, and narrow valley carved by glaciers and flooded by the sea. At this narrow place between Acadia and Norumbega Mountains, a concentrated ice flow cut deep into the granite bedrock - 150 feet (46 meters) below the present water level. At the mouth of Somes Sound, where the glacier deposited much gravel and rocky debris, the water is relatively shallow. Locality: view from the eastern side of Somes Sound Fjord, central Mt.
