Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Somersault Signal This type of signal was specific to the Great Northern Railway. They were introduced following a terrible railway accident in a snowstorm at Abbots Ripton in 1876 where two passenger trains and a freight were involved in a collision, not a great many miles from Wansford where this signal is located. At the time the GNR was using signals with arms that, when clear, fitted into a slot in the post. The signals also showed All Clear as their normal indication. During the storm the signals became frozen in their clear position preventing the signals from being set to danger while the freight train was shunted clear of the main lines. Information about this accident and many others along with the story of the investigations carried out afterwards can be read in the book Red For Danger by L.T.C.Rolt.
