The soldiers, though inrags and ill-fed, were under excellent disci-pline and observed strictly their orders to dono injury to person or property. EarlyTuesday morning, June 30th, the Southern-ers were hurried back to Gettysburg andwere engaged in the great battle at thatplace. The day after the battle forty-sevenloads of suppHes were sent to Gettysburgfrom York for the use of the wounded sol-diers. All who are old enough will remember thebarracks on the commons where was main-tained a government general hospital fromJuly 2y, 1862, to the close of the war. Dr.A. R. Blair acted as executive officer duringa considerable part of its history and a num-ber of the local physicians assisted. Therewas probably no better managed establish-ment of the kind anywhere during the war.At one time the number of patients was 2,-

York County iji 500, with twenty-two surgeons in attendance.The people of the town and vicinity, and par-ticularly the ladies, took much interest in thewelfare of the wounded and sick soldiers andcontributed much to their comfort. On the day Early evacuted York a cavalryand artillery eng-agement occurred at Han-over between some of Kilpatricks Union cav-alry corps and the forces of General J. E. B,Stuart. The former commanded about 5,-000 men and under him were Generals Cus-ter and Farnsworth. Stuarts men number-ed about 8,000 and his second in commandwas General Fitzhu^h Lee. The two arm-ies had been marching northward on linesconverging at Hanover, Stuart having travel-ed the more easterly of the two. Kilpat-ricks advance had almost reached Abbotts-town, having just barely escaped Early enroute to Gettysburg, while his rear guardconsisting of the Eighteenth Pennsylvaniacavalry, was at Hanover.
