the 82 York and sturdy settlers were wrapped in four, five andeven more frocks, which men bound closelyaround their loins/ Later tow began to bemixed with wool, then cotton appeared andeven linsey woolsey came to be worn bythose who could afford to be extravagant. In 1694 the Seneca-Susquehanna Indiansgranted to Col. Thomas Dongan, agent forWilliam Penn, the land on both sides of theSusquehanna river, apparently including allof York county. Dongan conveyed to PennJanuary 3, 1696. This was ratified by adeed direct to Penn from the chiefs of theSusquehannas in 1700, and still further ratifi-cation was made the succeeding year by Con-nodaghtah, another of their principal chiefs.Col. Dongan, at the time of the transfer tohim, was Governor of New York and his ser-vices were enlisted because some of the fivenations, chiefly the Cayugas, located in NewYork, claimed to have an interest in thesePennsylvania lands, the Indians along theSusquehanna being but a branch of their Z m m - I S O c (/I

York County 8§ tribe. This was simply in accord with Pennsuniform practice to treat peaceably with theIndians instead of unwarrantably taking theirlands by force. Disputes subsequentlyarose as to Penns title from the Indians butfinal relinquishment of all claims was after-wards made by the chiefs of the five nationsand of the Mohawks, to John, Thomas andRichard Penn, the heirs of William Penn. William Penn obtained his title to Penn-sylvania from the British crow^n in 1682, andfor seventy years thereafter the boundaryline between that province and Maryland wasa source of almost constant dispute. Whilethe territory in controversy w^as large in ex-tent yet the turmoil and actual conflict of au-thority seems to have centered at Wrights-ville and the region some miles to the v/estand south. The trouble grew out of ignor-ance as to the location of the 40th degree oflatitude in the western continent. The grant to Penn described the provinceof Pennsylvania as bounded on the north by ^^ York
