Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Men looking out of a dugout, Western Front, during World War I. Six soldiers looking out of a dugout. Their heads are at ground level and it is unclear if they are crouched or standing. The roof of the dugout is made of timber and possibly tin, covered by a thin layer of earth. There is a narrow slit for light, air and apparently also for access. Their rifles and kit are stacked on the ground outside.

This dugout looks crowded and badly made. It is dug into sloping ground and would almost certainly have flooded. The British Army appeared to feel that good dugouts made soldiers soft, however, the well-constructed German dugouts would have been better for morale and health.
