Text
[edit]Solomon Belden Noble, son of Hon. Daniel and Esther Belden Wolcott Noble, was born at Williamstown, May 22, 1819. He fitted for college in his native town. After graduation he spent three years in teaching and then entered the law office of Judge Samuel R. Betts. He was admitted to practice in 1844, and opened an office in Nassau Street. In 1868 he moved to Long Island City and spent most of his long life. He died of paralysis at the home of his son in Astoria, June 3, 1894, and at his own request his body was cremated. In 1854 he married Agnes Nicolson of New York City, who died in 1874. Five sons and a daughter survive him. Mr. Noble took an active interest in polities and being a Democrat became a member of Tammany Hall. The ability which kept him at the head of his profession throughout his long career was recognized by his political associates and he was twice elected to the Assembly from the district covering Thirty-Fifth street. Upon his removal to Long Island City he took a hearty interest in public affairs. He was the first Corporation Counsel, and was afterwards counsel to the Excise Board and the Board of Health. His last public office was that of assistant district attorney. He entered upon the duties of this office on the 1st of January, 1894, and was actively engaged in the same until stricken with the first stroke of paralysis in his Third street office. He had rounded out more than a full half century of active practice at the bar and it might be said that he died in the harness. These years had left their marks in his gray hairs, but he retained his vigor to a remarkable degree and even up to the time when the stroke of paralysis compelled him to retire he might be seen walking about the streets of the city regardless of the weather with all the vim and energy of men many years his junior. The members of the Queens County bar association passed suitable resolutions expressing their regard for him as a lawyer and citizen, 1838.
