Summary
[edit]DescriptionSolitary tree in Cors Caron Nature Reserve - geograph.org.uk - 1651626.jpg |
English: Solitary tree in Cors Caron Nature Reserve Cors Caron is a raised bog, based on silty ground left over from an ice-age glacial lake. This, together with the reduction in the water table due to past land drainage and peat digging, means there is sufficiently firm ground for shrubs and even some trees to grow on hummocks in the bog. However, trees and substantial numbers of shrubs are not typical of an intact raised bog.
A raised bog results from the colonisation of a former lake by fen vegetation. As this turns into peat, the bog grows and raises above the banks of the river, which has a very well-defined bed at the centre of the bog, unlike many streams originating or flowing through upland bogs. As the 'dome' of the raised bog is above the usual water level of the river, it is kept wet only by rainfall, resulting in an acidic rather than base-rich environment with a distinct flora. |
