Summary

[edit]
Description

Rugose coral in the Mississippian of Kentucky, USA.

The prominent fossil above & to the right of the picture's center is a rugose coral. These fossils are often nicknamed "horn corals", in reference to the tapered shape of the skeleton. A single, sea anemone-like polyp occupied the top, cup-like portion of each fossil. Many rugosans were solitary, but some formed colonial skeletons. Rugose corals are moderately common components in much of the Paleozoic rock record.

Classification: Animalia, Cnidaria, Rugosa

Stratigraphy: Ste. Genevieve Limestone (apparently the Joppa Member), upper Middle Mississippian

Locality: Rose's Pass, between Boone Avenue and Jeanne's Avenue, Mammoth Cave Ridge, Mammoth Cave National Park, western Kentucky, USA
