English: Soldiers having tea, Messines, Belgium, 1917. Group of six uniformed soldiers sitting on the ground around a makeshift picnic table. They appear to be using proper cups, plates and knives. They all look very happy and relaxed. Their rifles have been propped up against a nearby bush. Two of the men are wearing steel helmets. Scenes such as this were commonly used as propaganda, intended to boost morale amongst the troops and provide reassurance to those at home. The Battle of Messines Ridge (June 1917), commanded by General Plumer (1857-1932), successfully relieved German pressure on the French Army. Plumer was later made Baron Plumer of Messines and Bilton in the County of York and is buried in Westminster Abbey. |
