Summary
[edit]DescriptionSoldiers' Monument, City Cemetery, Tonawanda, New York - 20220819.jpg |
English: Located at the City Cemetery in Tonawanda, New York, the Soldiers' Monument is a white bronze shaft just over 26 feet high and with a base of 6½ square feet, engraved with garland, star, and eagle reliefs on its sides and crowned by a mustachioed soldier standing proudly with musket in hand. Built at a cost of $2,500 covered by fundraising events from the Ladies' Auxiliary Corps of the Winfield B. Scott Post No. 129 of the Grand Army of the Republic, the monument was unveiled on the morning of Memorial Day 1910, in the words of a Buffalo News article marking the event, as "a memorial to the living as well as the departed veterans of the Civil War now and formerly connected with the local post". The ceremony, presided over by General William S. Bull, the Adjutant General of the G.A.R.'s New York State division, began with a parade leading from the headquarters of the post to the cemetery and, aside from the unveiling, also comprised musical performances; speeches by Mayors Charles Zuchmaier and L. T. Fick of Tonawanda and North Tonawanda, respectively; and a sermon by Rev. H. A. Crane of First Methodist Episcopal Church. As seen in August 2022. |
