[edit]DescriptionSoldier of the 5th New York Zouaves, 2nd Battle of Manassas,1862.jpg |
English: The figure started as a beautifully sculpted casting from Shenandoah Miniatures. All his equipment, except for his belt buckle and the body of his canteen, are scratch-built. I converted his pose from walking by rocking him back on his back foot. I opened up his tunic and cut off his fez, hollowed it out, and added a custom made tassel of fine wire. I completely re-sculpted his hair and his right hand. The cartridge box has straps with buckles made of wire. The rifle is wood, stainless steel, lead and carved super glue. The bullets are carved lead.
The figure is loosely based on Pvt. Dennis Guinan, a veteran who tried to get one last shot off before executing a fighting retreat. His uniform is faded, because not all men in his unit were issued replacement uniforms that day, and I suspect he was not among them. The bullet striking his rifle knocked him backward, sending him into shallow water of the creek he was crossing, Young's Branch. He was knocked unconscious when his head hit a submerged log. He actually survived with minimal injuries. I could not say the figure represents Pvt. Guinan, as I do not know what he looked like, finding no images of him. I also added another impact he did not suffer, for dramatic effect, to the stock of his rifle just behind the lock plate. I did that because many men from that unit suffered six or more hits, as they were outnumbered sixty to one.
