The Soldier Pass Trailhead was closed temporarily in early April 2017 while a gate was installed on the motorized trail access (FR 9904). Red Rock Ranger District took advantage of the temporary closure to make much-needed improvements to the trailhead parking lot. The parking lot at the Soldier Pass Trailhead was having drainage issues, particularly on the east side of the lot. Cedar posts were installed to bring the area up level with the rest of the lot, and then backfilled the area with 15 tons of gravel. The improved lot is much more level and should drain well We also trimmed up a few trees so folks leaving parking lot, will now be able to see any incoming traffic from paved road. The newly installed gate is a result of a decision to restrict motorized use of the Soldier Pass road. The Coconino National Forest worked with the City of Sedona, the local community, permitted outfitter/guide companies, and other stakeholders on the plans. The road will remain closed to motorized use by the general public until a permit system is implemented for the general public, which will allow 12 privately driven, unguided vehicles in addition to 12 commercially permitted tour guide vehicles per day. Soldiers Pass was a group effort. Kudos to Michael Gordon, Adam LaDell, Christina Bentley, Michael Suggs, Laura Koller, Mark Goshorn, and Julie Rowe for their stellar work.
