DescriptionSofia - The Eastern Gate of Serdica Fortress at the Serdika Metro Station (Panorama).jpg | The pedestrian subway crossing under the 'Serdika' metro station in Sofia features the East Gate of the ancient Serdica fortress. Around 29 BC, Sofia was conquered by the Romans, who renamed it 'Ulpia Serdica', for the Thracian 'Serdi' tribe. It became important from the reign of Trajan - who ordered the construction of its protective walls - and from the 1st to 4th century AD, Serdica was a flourishing Roman city. | ||

It became important from the reign of Trajan - who ordered the construction of its protective walls - and from the 1st to 4th century AD, Serdica was a flourishing Roman city. Less than a kilometre to the north-west, near the Halite shopping centre, parts of the North Gate have been uncovered, inscribed with praises to the Emperors Marcus Aurelius and Commodus. Parts of the ancient amphitheatre are visible at the Arena di Serdica hotel. |
