Description
English: Custom signs pertaining to attractions at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area remind visitors to social distance, June 29, 2020. BLM photo: Meredith Matherly

“Keep a Fresnel Lens Apart,” reads one sign along a walking path, as the diameter of the original Yaquina Head Lighthouse lens is 6 feet. Keep migrating down the path like a gray whale is another message, as the big marine mammals often seen from Yaquina Head must keep moving while travelling 12,000 miles a year. And although access to the tide pools is still closed for safety reasons, another sign reminds groups to stay together in a unit like sea anemones, a common sight during low tide at Yaquina Head’s Cobble Beach. “Aggregating anemones group with members of their family, but avoid others,” reads the bottom of the custom social distancing sign. The Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area Interpretive Center, tide pools, and lighthouse are temporarily closed, but visitors can access trails and available overlooks.
