Notes Pearson’s Sand Soap Company set up in Hamilton East by Edward Pearson, 4th Waikato Militia, in 1886. Within a decade Pearson’s was selling throughout New Zealand and to Australia, and a manufacturing plant was established in NSW. In New Zealand the manufacturing plant was moved to Auckland in the 1900s, and by 1922 the company had set up a branch in London. In New Zealand Pearson’s Carbolic Sand Soap became part of Taniwha Products Ltd. The sandsoap continued to be marketed through to the 1950s and was widely used by tradesmen and also domestically. Thomas Pearson, Edward’s son, who set up the Australian branch, also contributed to the proofing process used in the Australian Driza-bone stockman’s coat.
