SNUFF BOTTLES: The snuff bottles are the result of the impact of tobacco on art.In China tobacco seems to have been introduced by the portuguese when they estabilshed their own at Macao in Southern China in the 16 th century. Snuff is powdered Tobaco especially prepeared for the inhalation .The practicing of inhalating of snuff seems to started simultaneously both in the east and west roughly during the mid of 17 th century. Inspite of stiff opposotion from the Royal courts in the China and elsewhere. The snuff bottles of China were made of every conceivable.material such as Porcelian - Glass - Horn - Metal - Lacquar. - Jade and other Semi precious stones. The Snuffbottles are painted of remarkable and intricate workmanship with the themes depicting Birds,Flowers,landscapes,Mythelogical scense and legends. |
