| Description |
The largest of all owls in North America, this mature male didn't blend in so well after a series of unusual 40 degree days during January in North Dakota. Unlike other owls, snowy owls are diurnal (active during the day). They are found in the U.S. only during winter months and they spend the breeding season north in the Arctic. They commonly sit on the ground on a small rise, or on fenceposts, bales, or other perches where they can keep a sharp, yellow eye and ear out for mice, voles, or other prey.
