[edit]DescriptionSnow in eastern Russia (MODIS 2015-01-02).jpg |
English: By the winter solstice on December 21, 2014, winter weather was deepening its grip in southeast Siberia and northern Mongolia. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) flying aboard NASAs Aqua satellite captured a true-color image of the region at 06:10 UTC (1:20 p.m. Krasnoyarsk Time) on that same day.
Russias tree-covered Sayan Mountains, which are rich in coniferous species such as Siberian Pine and Siberian Fir, have been well-blanketed with snow and can be seen in the western half of the image. To the east, blue Lake Baikal remains mostly ice-free, while in the north the twisting Bratsk Reservoir along with the Angara River, which runs from Lake Baikal to the reservoir, appear to be well-frozen. Along the Russia/Mongolia border, ice is forming atop Khovsgol Lake in the north, while in the west the very large, round and shallow Uvs Lake is well-frozen and is covered with a thick layer of snow. It is nearly indistinguishable from the surrounding desert of the Uvs Nuur Basin, which also lies underneath heavy snow cover. Although Uvs Lake is highly saline, it freezes early it is normally frozen from October until May of each year. This same region was captured by the MODIS instrument aboard the Terra satellite on November 6, 2014. That image was published by NASAs Earth Observatory in early November.
