Description
English: On January 20, 2017, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite flew over northwest China and acquired a true-color image of a rare event – snow lying across the shifting sand of the Taklimakan Desert.

Heavy snow is common in the mountains surrounding the vast Taklimakan, and on January 20 almost all of the mountainous land surrounding the Tarim Basin was covered in white. The mountain ranges include the Tien Shan in the north, the Kunlun in the south, and in the southwest, the Karakoram Mountains. The word’s second highest mountain, K2, is found in the Karakoram Mountains.

Because the Tarim Basin lies in the rain shadow of these mountains, little precipitation falls in the Taklimakan Desert. The total precipitation each year ranges from 1.5 inches (38 mm) in the west to only 0.4 inch (10 mm) in the east – with almost none of that being in the form of snow.
