Summary

[edit]
Description
English: On October 30, 2015, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASAs Aqua satellite captured this true-color image of snow across Mongolia. Bright white snow lies heavily atop the ridges of the Altai Mountains, in the southwest section of the image, and across Russias Sayan Mountains west of Lake Baikal. A thinner layer of snow covers much of the rest of both southeastern Russia and Mongolia. Mid-October is the time the snow lies down across the region, according to a story in the Siberian Times. That means that it not only snows but that the ground temperatures have become cold enough for long enough to retain the falling snow, rather than encourage melting. But the opening days of October 2015 did not bring chill and snowflakes to much of Mongolia and southern Siberia, but balmy temperatures of a second spring. As of October 10, spring flowers such as wild apple and bird cherry were in bloom in Buryatia, southeast of the large Lake Baikal. Temperatures reported across Siberia included: 80.6˚F (27 ˚C) in Altai, 75 ˚F (24 ˚C) in Barnaul, and 70 ˚F (21 ˚C) in Novosibirsk and Tomsk. In Ulan Bator, Mongolia, temperatures reached 68 ˚F (20 ˚C) in early October. By the end of the month, however, temperatures began to drop to more seasonal ranges as snow began to fall.
